Tim Kennelly (fielders choice) and Robbie Glendinning (walk) put a pair of runners on with two out ahead of Wade striking with Australia’s fourth hit of the game. Kennedy then allowed a lead-off walk to Tristan Pompey in the top of the ninth but Australia turned a double play to move within an out of its first-ever Premier12 win.

Searle allowed a walk ahead of getting a fly ball to clinch victory and set up a thrilling finish to Group C.

Relief pitcher Steven Kent gave Australia’s struggling offence every chance, keeping the score locked at 1-all through to the eighth.

The left-hander struck out seven and allowed one hit and a walk in 4 1/3 scoreless innings ahead of Kennedy taking over the mound.

Team Australia took a first-inning lead as it looked to keep its super round hopes alive.

Lead-off hitter Kennelly doubled to get the inning underway and advanced on a ground ball before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Glendinning.

Canada responded in the top of the second inning.

Tristan Pompey doubled ahead of scoring on a double from Rene Tosoni with two-out.

Australia’s chances to score from that point were few and far between.

Allan de San Miguel reached on a strikeout wild pitch in the third but was stranded on first and Logan Wade got aboard on an error in the fourth.

Glendinning picked up Australia’s first hit since Kennelly’s lead-off double in the opening inning with a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth.
