Boral Team Australia went behind early and was unable to recover in a Premier12 super round loss to Mexico at Tokyo Dome on Tuesday afternoon.
Mexico started with a bang, going deep on the first pitch it faced, ahead of recording a 3-0 victory to send Australia crashing to an 0-3 record in the super round.
Jonathan Jones put Australia on the back foot early, hitting a home run on the first pitch from starting pitcher Josh Guyer.
Guyer threw 30 pitches in the first inning but avoided more damage, stranding two runners after issuing walks to Esteban Quiroz and Efren Navarro.
But Mexico doubled its lead on designated hitter Matthew Clark’s solo home run to right field in the bottom of the fourth.
Jones’ RBI-triple added a second run on the fourth as Mexico built a 3-0 lead against left-handed Australian reliever Steve Kent.
Darryl George collected Australia’s first hit with a one-out single in the third.
The infielder was out at home trying to score from first – and tie the ballgame – on a double from catcher Robbie Perkins.
Robbie Glendinning (single) and Aaron Whitefield (walk) reached in the fourth but were left on base.
Georgie collected two hits for Team Australia.
Australia left four runners on base and managed four hits to seven.
Mexico starter Eduardo Vera worked five scoreless innings, giving up four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
Todd van Seensel and Luke Wilkins worked two scoreless relief innings for Australia.
On Monday night, Australia led world number one Japan through six innings before falling 3-2.
Australia’s 5-0 opening-round loss to fellow Group C super round qualifier South Korea also counts towards the second-round standings.
Boral Team Australia faces the US in its next super round clash tomorrow.
First pitch is scheduled for midday (local time) at Tokyo Dome.
Fox Sports 503 and Kayo Sports will show all the action into Australia starting from 1:55 pm AEDT.
