2020 Australian Veterans Cricket National Championship Deferred

Read Time:1 Minute, 45 Second

The Over 50’s Veterans Cricket Australian National Championship committee have made the difficult decision to defer the 2020 National Championships, due to be held in Adelaide, until 2021.

The South Australian Veterans Cricket Association (SAVCA) Committee feel the deferral of the event is in the best interest of public health and safety and players and partners, due to the continuing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic restrictions and conditions applicable to the hosting of major events.

The Committee left the decision as late as was practical, in the hope that the COVID-19 situation may have passed.

Teams from all over Australia participate in the championship and VCA were considering an application by New Zealand to participate. Due to the current interstate and international border restrictions, it cannot be guaranteed that SAVCA could confidently hold a successful, ‘all encompassing National Championships.

National Championship Director, Anthony Telfer said, “While it’s disappointing we can’t hold the championship this year, there are two major risks, we face by holding the even:

“One is the financial impact it would have on the participants and SAVCA, if we would have to cancel the event at the last minute”, Telfer commented, “we all saw first-hand what transpired at the recent World Cup in South Africa and don’t want a repeat of that”,

“Secondly, if we proceeded and caused an outbreak in South Australian community, this would have a negative impact on Veterans cricket in SA, which is currently experiencing a significant increase of interest in participation.”

Deferral of the event is especially disappointing as the profile of the event has never been higher. The SAVCA committee attracted a record number of teams in competing the Adelaide Oval was secured for the welcome and presentation dinners, a Championship Ambassador had been appointed and accommodation and car/bus sponsorship arranged.

The Committee felt that they could not delay their decision any longer.

The SAVCA Board appreciate all the support they have received in making this decision. Please stay safe and focus on playing in your state competition and we look forward to seeing you all in Adelaide in 2021.
