The NBL’s 10th team will be named the Jack Jumpers, according to Tasmanian reporter Brent Costelloe.

Tasmania is set to join the NBL from the 2021/22 season and last week the franchise revealed the final two names in the running to be the team’s official nickname were “Tridents’ and ‘Jack Jumpers’.

It is now being reported Jack Jumpers has won the race.

A jack jumper is a species of venomous ant native to Australia and most commonly found in Tasmania.

As the name suggests, it is known for its ability to jump long distances.

The nickanme has split opinion online, with the divide largely centred on whether or not you are from the mainland.

Alongside Tridents, Jack Jumpers beat ‘Pride’ and ‘Mountaineers’ for naming rights.

Both the ‘Tigers’ and ‘Devils’ were not considered due to their respective links with cricket and AFL.
