Day 2 of the Boost Mobile Pro Gold Coast, part of the World Surf League (WSL) Australian Grand Slam of Surfing, will continue today in pumping four-to-six foot barrels at South Stradbroke Island. The even will culminate today with winner’s being crowned by day’s end. Competition will commence at 7:00 a.m. AEST (QLD time).
“We’ve arrived this morning to find absolutely pumping four-to-six foot surf at South Straddie,” said WSL’s Boost Mobile Pro Gold Coast Contest Director Renato Hickel. “This is sure to be a great event with the finals set to run around lunchtime. We will start the day with the heritage heat then move into the remaining heats of the men’s quarterfinals then continue from there into semis and finals. It’s set to be an epic day of competition.”
The day will commence with a Heritage Heat involving some of surfing’s most iconic figures including 1999 World Champion Mark ‘Occy’ Occhilupo, Brendan ‘Margo’ Margieson, Dean Morrison, Bede Durbridge and Kieren Perrow.
Heat 4 of the Men’s Quarterfinals will see a classic goofy vs natural battle between Connor O’Leary and Mikey Wright.
The opening heat of the Women’s Semifinals wills Macy Callaghan take on event wildcard, Sophie McCulloch.
The Australian Grand Slam of Surfing part of the WSL Countdown will see 24 of Australia’s best surfers (12 men and 12 women ) go heat to head in their respective divisions. 11 male CT competitors 8 female CT competitors will be on standby for each stop, some looking to compete for the first time in 2020. The remaining spots in each field will be allocated to the highest ranked 2019 non-qualifying Australian surfers or selected wildcard surfers.
The broadcast-only ‘strike mission’ style event, not designed for spectators due to COVID, will see competitors given just four days’ notice with the competition window, to travel to each location to compete over two days. Surf conditions will determine which location is surfed and when to make sure surfers compete in the best conditions possible.
Adding to the high stakes, men’s and women’s overall series champions will each win $20,000AUD to donate to a charity of their choice.
The Boost Mobile Pro Gold Coast will run at South Stradbroke Island on October 6th and 7th.
